That's me
Many people know me as Maya, the karateka.
In addition to my sport, I also have other characteristics that distinguish myself and that are important to me in life.
On this page, I would therefore like to introduce myself from a non-sporting point of view.

Japan
Born half Swiss and half Japanese, Japan has had a huge influence on my life since I was little. My choice of sport has only strengthened this connection.
I travel to my homeland once or twice a year to visit my family, to train in the country where karate originated, or to compete.
When I am abroad for a long time, I miss white rice with miso soup as much as hard farmer's bread with cheese.

Educational Scientist
In summer 2022, I completed my training as a primary school teacher at the FHNW University of Teacher Education. My status as a top athlete allowed me to study part-time.
After a two-year training break, where I concentrated fully on sports, I started my master's degree in "Science Didactics" in autumn 2024. I am pursuing my career goal of establishing myself in educational science.
In order to keep myself financially afloat, I work part-time on research projects at the PH Zurich and PH Bern. I can adapt both jobs very flexibly to my everyday sporting life.

Cat lover
My best friends at home: Momo, Taro, Kibi. After a long trip, I can hardly wait to hug my three treasures again.
We have welcomed new babies several times. This is always a very exciting but wonderful time.

Baking/cooking
My second passion besides sport is baking. On an evening when I don't train, I live out my culinary creativity to the fullest and try out interesting recipes.
I must add that after baking/cooking I enjoy the food just as much as the process before it!
Here you can find my Instagram profile " Yume Café ". Who knows, maybe in a few years there will be a real, not just virtual, Yume Café!

Travel
Because of all the competitions and training camps, I travel a lot around the world. Unfortunately, I often don't get to see much of the destination when I'm travelling.
If my wallet still allows me at the end of the season, I like to explore new places. I particularly like culinary trips, where I get to try new and exotic flavours!
